Gustavo Suarez Tambunting — or better known as Cong. Gus to his constituents — first served the public as a Councilor for four terms — 1988 to 1992, 1992 to 1995, 2001 to 2004, and 2004 to 2007. During his term, he was recognized as the Most Outstanding Councilor for three consecutive years. In 2007, Gus started serving as the Vice Mayor of Parañaque and was re-elected in 2010 for a second term. After that, he was elected as Congressman of the 2nd District of Parañaque City in 2013 and was re-elected for the same position in 2016.

One of Gus Tambunting’s achievements is passing bills that help his people. As a member of congress, he has used his position to speak out about the various issues that affect his constituents — specifically the youth, family, senior citizens, urban poor, women, and LGBTQ.

RA 11310: Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps)

For Gus, the family is considered the smallest unit of society, but it is also the strongest.

The 4Ps aim to provide conditional cash transfers to poor households to improve health, nutrition, and education. The cash transfer is applicable for a maximum period of 7 years, but the National Advisory Council (NAC) may recommend a longer period. The DSWD is the lead agency tasked to select qualified household beneficiaries through a standardized system.

RA 10931: Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education

Gus believes that the youth is the key to the future of the nation.

The Universal Access To Quality Tertiary Education Act aims to promote universal access to higher education. This is possible by providing free tuition and school fees in local universities and colleges, state universities and colleges, and state-run technical-vocational institutions.

RA 11164: Increasing Monthly Old-Age Pension of Senior Veterans

One of Gus’ principles is to care for his constituents, no matter the age.

RA 11164 officially increases the old-age pension of veterans that served in the Vietnam War, Korean War, and World War II. From 5,000 pesos, the pension was increased to 20,000 pesos

RA 11223: Universal Health Care Act

From financial, livelihood, and medical assistance — Gus aims to help the urban poor by supporting bills that make life easier for them.

The Universal Health Care Act automatically enrolls all Filipinos in the National Health Insurance Program — which means that citizens will have access to quality and affordable health services.

RA 11210: 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law

As a public servant and a congressman, Gus believes in equal rights for all — no matter what their sex or gender is.

RA 11210 increases the maternity leave period to 105 days for female workers. This leave is paid, but there is also an option to extend for an additional 30 days without pay.  Other than that, solo mothers are granted an additional 15 days.
